John is a remarkable cowboy of our present day. He is tall, lanky, and as a cowboy, he is the real deal. I spotted him seated in this profile next to a chuckwagon during a championship cookout. His cowboy attire typifies the American Spirit...red, white and blue. The contrast of his hat in direct sunlight with face in shadow was an invitation to paint!

Shortly after completing this painting, I learned from some of his friends that he was in an accident with his horse. His firm resolve to survive the broken bones just reinforced my opinion of the all-American Cowboy, quiet, soft spoken, endurance...courage comes in many forms.

Labrador retrievers are among the most favored dogs of the canine world. They are gentle giants, faithful companions, excellent hunting dogs. This is the last of my Christmas commissions. It is also one of my all-time favorites. I met "Bear" a few days ago to finalize her portrait. What an endearing canine! she was thoroughly in sync with the commands of her owner's father. (I'm not sure who is more attached-the owner or his dad) No two animals-even of the same species-are alike. Each has his own character traits, expression in the eyes, his posture...and his owner is able to recognize them at a glance. I challenged myself to capture Bear's soul on canvas. It is my hope that Bear's family will enjoy this beautiful experience as well. Merry Christmas, "Bear."

Ribbon candy is one of those classics of rock candy. It's been around forever. I remember getting some of this in my stocking when I was a child. Now I am "stuffing" the stockings for my grandchildren with the same wonderful kind of candy. I chose this as part of my series as the reds and greens just sparkle with delicious color. Another delightful memory...goes along with thoughts of presents, the Christmas tree, twinkling lights...ah, Christmas.

Peppermint candy, in the form of a candy cane or round mints, has many functions. It has a history of aiding in the aftermath of eating or to "enhance" or "sweeten" one's breath. There is, however, another important role in the seasons...it is a sign of Christmas approaching. Going to the store for candy was not a routine event in my childhood. Imagine how excited we were when we arrived at our grandmother's house to discover a candy dish filled with these delicious treats at holiday time. Now it is my turn to carry on family traditions. I set out peppermints in a festive candy dish to treat my art students as they leave class (with their parents' permission, of course). The best part of today's post is that there are no hidden calories in pleasant memories....enjoy the moment.

Thanksgiving is upon us!

In the United States we celebrate this time of year when our forefathers celebrated their first year at Plymouth, Massachusetts during the 1600's with a time of Thanksgiving. There is a story in which food was so scarce that most days the Pilgrims only had a daily ration of 5 kernels of corn apiece. The Pilgrims, refusing to give in to despair chose to trust in God, regardless of their circumstances. They considered these kernels of corn as a blessing. I chose to depict "Candy Corn" as commemorative of the stedfastness of our forefathers during this Thanksgiving season...let US be thankful!

Many years ago, I used to work as a "packer" for a well-known candy company. That meant I placed a piece of chocolate candy into a paper foil and packed it into a fancy box. I had to learn to do this rapidly because the box was on a conveyor belt & moved along. The trick was to put "x" number of candies in proper order in the box before it moved along the belt. Much later after this job, I saw a Lucille Ball show in which she did the same thing. She didn't move fast enough & began stuffing candy down her blouse to make up for lost time. I did not have to resort to that method but learned that my real calling was art, not that of a "candy packer." Nevertheless, it was an experience that brought this bon-bon to a pleasant memory..enjoy.

Equine Expo Show with Weatherford Art Association, Vonnie Kohn

Whew! What a busy November it's been. A trio of members from our art guild (Karon Richardson, Julie Lawther, and myself) hosted a booth at the Teskey's Equine Expo in Weatherford, Texas early this month. In Texas, we are experiencing an unseasonal heat in the month of November. My "summer tan" came a little late during this show..aka, "boiled lobster" status. We had much fun, good sales, and a raffle which was a fund raiser for our art group. It included 3 (excited) winners for a Christmas ornament with a painted horse (or small pet) of the owner. There was also a re-enactment group (with a jail) next to our booth & a Country/ Western band to provide entertainment. I was careful not to get some time in "jail." What a good day for sharing our art with others.

It's been one of those unpredictable weeks! This week I received an email from the current president of my art guild -a group that has over 100 members. He was requesting that I present a very special award to the past president, Paul Latham, standing to my right in the photo. The reason? I shared the same time frame as an officer (Vice-Pres. of Shows), & this new president was not a member at that time. Sounded good to me...I agreed. The Betty Murray Award in our art guild is equivalent to the Most Valuable Player award in football.This award usually goes to the one person who best represented the guild to the community and who exemplified a high standard of dedicated service to the art group.

When the moment arrived to step up to the microphone, Paul preceded me to the microphone to speak to the art members. To my surprise, he was announcing my name for the Betty Murray award! I froze. Upon recovering, I took the mike, spoke of Paul's dedication during that four years & handed him an award too. It was his turn to become speechless.. It was a night full of delightful surprises. The board members had decided to engage each of us to present the other with this award to ensure the element of surprise. Anyway, Paul and I were both humbled and grateful for the honor.

There is a good lesson from this...I will not be playing "poker" with any of those board members.

A "golandrina" is a young Spanish woman skilled in equestrian drill team riding. Here in the Southwest, there are many such drill teams who perform on Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May), a holiday celebrating Mexican heritage and pride. This holiday is celebrated both in the United States & regionally in Mexico to celebrate the cause of freedom and democracy.

This young beauty has taken a pause to enjoy the moment between the performances. Her drills have taken many hours of practice to synchronize in perfect timing with many other young ladies. These women are all dressed alike, with matching tack and gear and are a delight to watch as they perform.

Opening Gallery Reception at the Doss Heritage & Culture Center

Tonight was gallery night and the official opening of the Weatherford Art Exhibition at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford, Texas. There were two featured artists, Michael Bain, who specializes in troumpe l'oil ("fool the eye") technique, and Pamela Stern, a clay ceramist, who casts her illusionary fugures in a way that challenges the viewer to think in a provocative manner.

The museum show was featured on Channel 11 in Ft. Worth, a tv news station prior to the opening night. The art exhibit will continue through the entire month of September, 2011. More information may be obtained from the Doss website:

Spanish Collection of Oils by Vonnie Kohn, at Beto's Restaurant

In Texas, we have a wonderful cuisine known as Tex-Mex. Near us is a place known as Beto's Restaurant. The owner, Beto Garza, is also the chef, while his wife is hostess. We came to know Beto when he was employed at another local restaurant in our town. His excellent cooking left its mark on our community. When he became a proprietor of his own place, we found ourselves as faithful customers once again.

His blank walls became a "canvas" for my paintings to hang. Here is one of them, a 24 x 48" gallery wrapped canvas whose subject is one of five main Spanish Missions located on the "Mission Trail" in San Antonio, Tx.

"New Paintings at the Doss Museum"...by Vonnie Kohn, contemporary western landscape, Native art

Welcome news... from the curator of the Doss Heritage & Culture Museum in Weatherford, Tx--a town also known as the "cutting horse capital" of the world. The exhibit will be the month of September, 2011. These paintings will be available for sale during the show.

I have just included "Cactus Heat" in my previous post (see below), but the second painting is not a painting...it is a skilled drawing on a metal plate, etched with acid baths, and then printed on a specially prepared rag paper. It is one of a limited edition of 20 etchings. (which means when the edition is completed, the plate will be destroyed).

This Etching is entitled: "A Rich Heritage." The image was inspired by many trips to

family gatherings, otherwise known as Powwows, as I observed the matriarchs in their finest Native American jewelry, fans, and prayer shawls. (The prayer shawl is required to step into the ring for dancing...it is a sign of respect.)

I used to live in the Southwest in a dry, hot, desert area in my early years. Many do not see this as a desirable place to be, however, there is much beauty to observe during the spring and summer.

The prickly pear cactus has a time of flowering that only lasts for about a week. Often the "fruit" will nearly cover the entire cactus. I stumbled on this cactus in bloom on the way to an art class about a month ago. Fortunately my camera was with me. The day was in the triple digits, but it did not take away from the beauty of this beautiful cactus...hence, the name-"Cactus Heat"

Ever had a really hard day at work? Backbreaking, searing outdoor heat, cranky horse, stubborn cattle? I photographed this saddle resting on a wagon wheel at a chuck wagon cookout on a really hot day. It belongs to a good friend, artist, and spur maker, Bob Burleson of Parker County, Tx. I seem to have a nostalgia for saddles...my father was a top notch saddle-maker when I was young. The smell of leather still captures my attention. I even find myself going into a leather shop to smell the leather!

While visiting a Texas ranch a few weeks ago, I happened to witness a couple of cowboys herding several horses in from the "back forty." These were horses that had been on the range for a few weeks. There's something exciting about watching a herd of horses running full speed, with thundering hooves across the pasture, their manes flying in the breeze. In time, they would be tamed down to work as the cowhorses they were meant to be.

"Watchful Eyes" by Vonnie Kohn, oil painting of dogs with western setting

Have you ever observed how much our animals love us without strings attached? My family was entering a Tex-Mex restaurant one evening when I noticed all the patrons looking out (seemingly at us) a large window. As my eyes followed their stares, I noticed a pickup to my immediate right with two dogs in the back, guarding the saddles, blankets, bridles. They were being completely obedient to the command, "stay." When we entered the restaurant, I found two cowboys, wearing their full regalia, complete with boots and spurs, standing in line. I didn't have my camera at the time, but I remembered.....two years later, with the right setups, I completed this painting. I still remember the obedience of the border collie, the other, an australian cowdog. I could just envision those dogs waiting patiently in a pasture while their master was hunting, or working a fence line, or locating a young calf. What do you think? Presentation of Portrait to Museum, "Native Son"

January was another busy month in my calendar! Parker County Today, a monthly magazine whose founder & editors were part of the Ft. Worth Star Telegram, featured an interesting article in their January issue, entitled "Native Son." It described the portrait of S. W. T. Lanham, former governor of Texas during the years of 1902-07. The local chapter the Sons of Confederate Veterans of Weatherford, Tx commissioned me to do a portrait of him during 2010. The painting was presented to the Doss Heritage Center on January 25, 2011. Doss Heritage & Culture Center is a museum featuring the history of Parker County, west of Dallas-Ft. Worth. The following is an excerpt of the article:

"NATIVE SON" by Phil Riddle

For a small town, Weatherford has made quiet an impact in a number of arenas. Mary Martin (Peter Pan) and Larry Hagman are famous actors from the Parker County seat. Former House Speaker Jim Wright got his political start as mayor of Weatherford. And cattlemen Charles Goodnight & Oliver Loving both had ties to this North Texas town. Those people & their contributions are important says Jerry Walden, warning against forgetting another hometown son who made a name for himself. That would be Samuel W. T. Lanham, former Governor of Texas who called Weatherford home.

Walden, commander of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp bearing Lanham's name, decided folks in the former governor's home territory should be reminded of his accomplishments as the state's chief executive. So he commissioned a painting of Lanham, which will be displayed at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center. "I wanted to do something to give back to the community," Walden said.

Walden said the portrait, painted by well-known artist, Vonnie Kohn, will be on loan to the Doss Center, but will also be displayed on a rotation basis to area banks. Kohn, the artist, researched decades of portraits & photos to come up with a composite age-correct portrait of Lanham during his tenure in office at Austin. The traditional portrait included a ghost image of the capital in the background displaying the American Flag and the Flag of the Lone Star State.

"Rainbow in a Blue Vase"

When I was a younger artist, my mother-in-law had several bushes of hydrangeas planted in her front garden bed. She called them "snowball" plants. In memory of her, I planted a hydrangea bush in my front yard a few years ago. In our Texas heat, I had to take special care to put this bush in a partially shaded area...not an easy feat when there are few trees in the front yard! It has never done well; however, this year it was completely loaded with all the colors of this variety of flower--blues, pinks, lavendars, & even whites! As a homage to Spring (& my mother-in-law), I have put this Rainbow in a Blue Vase. Enjoy!

Have you ever wanted to receive a dozen roses from an admirer? Roses are my favorite floral subject..also the most challenge for me to paint. I participated in a plein air event at the Dallas Arboretum last Spring and chose to wander into the Rose Garden. I was absolutely enthralled with the many varieties of roses. I didn't know there were so many! This small oil was a result of the many studies I was able to accomplish before leaving. The small gallery wrapped canvas was a perfect surface to work quickly because of the changing light.

Gov. S.W.T. Lanham of Tx, Confederate soldier, portrait by Vonnie Kohn

This is a posthumous commission that I have been working on for some time. Mr. S.W.T. Lanham was a governor of Texas during the late 1800's. His 2-story mansion which sits on an entire city block is located in Weatherford, Texas. He was involved in many legislative areas in the state, including the organizing of the University of Texas. As a former Confederate soldier, he was highly esteemed by the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Weatherford. It's been my privilege to attend a unique competition in the Western culture lately...Chuckwagon cookouts. One of my students is a Grand Champion in this area. I visited his wagon last Saturday & came up with some very interesting photos. This set-up is one of the aspects of judging his wagon outfit. Period clothing is also important, as well as camp site layout for the wagon & the equipment. I chose to paint this in watercolor to reflect the vibrant colors of the wagon.

Have you ever had a bad day? I went to a ranch recently to do some plein air studies for a studio painting with a Western theme. I happened to run across this young longhorn steer who really wasn't impressed with visitors. I managed to do a quick study, but didn't get too close to this one! I could tell his mood was challenging to anyone that crossed his path. Notice his tail swishing..the next thing would be the ears laid back. That is the time to "run for it."

"The Real Doll"-portrait of French, German dolls with "the real doll"

I have been painting furiously for an upcoming fine art show at the Dutch Art Gallery in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area of Texas. The dates are Nov 1st-Dec 31st. I would like to invite all to come and enjoy. Note that one of my paintings (right) will be in the show. This painting had it's moments! The trick was to paint the eyes of the dolls to look like glass, while the "real doll" had human eyes. A couple of times I had to paint out the eyes & start over...not an easy feat, considering that the colors in gouache are not easily duplicated! Also, I could only paint one doll a day...so this was not one of those "painting-a-day" moments...

"Teamwork"

I LOVE horses. I've been riding them & painting them since I was a child. I happened to pass by these two beauties while at a local community outdoor festival. I had been watching them for awhile & finally walked up to the owner to ask permission to photograph them. They have been "partners" for several years now. It takes time and patience to train the right animals to work together in perfect sync. These two fit the role they have been asked to perform.

"Dream Catcher Series I-Sweet Dreams"

I have an Apache cradleboard that was a gift many years ago. I've wanted to include this wonderful gift in a painting to commemorate the daily life of Native Americans. As a result I have decided to start a new series entitled "Dream Catcher Series." This is the first painting in that series which is the still-life portrait of an infant boy. The colors of the cradleboard are typical of the Apache tribe; the beadwork is for a boy. Included are his first moccasins, his medicine bag, and the gourd rattle used in the Naming Ceremony for his name. The Dream Catcher is usually hung over the cradleboard to encourage good dreams. In this case, the symbols in the background typify his first hunt. Red is usually the color of war, but can also signify a hunting party. Native American children are encouraged from an early age to practice their skills as a hunter in order to take a place of responsibility as a provider for the tribe. Musings of a work-in-progress

It has been awhile since my last posting, however, I have been busy with a posthumous portrait commission of Gov. S.W.T. Lanham, a Confederate general during the civil war. He was also one of the governors of Texas who was one of the founding fathers of the University of Texas, and a long list of other contributions to our great state. I will post a work-in-progress soon. It is a larger work..24 x 30..and being painted in oil on triple primed canvas. I normally paint the negative space first, but started this as a demonstration for one of my art classes to instruct in the process of value painting of flesh tones. Now I have the challenge of adding the background & adjusting the flesh tones that are influenced by their surroundings...arghhhh!

"Autumn Crossing"

Texas has been spectacular with the changing of Fall foliage this year. Here is a commissioned painting I have completed for the holidays. A Vaquero (Spanish cowboy) & his compadre are attempting to cross the Paluxy River. While his friend is still finding a path in the swift current, the Vaquero is pausing to take in the beauty of his surroundings.

"Man's Best Friend"

Have you ever wanted to do a portrait of your best friend? No, I don't mean the human kind; I am talking about your pet. My little dachshund, Snoopy, (who lives up to that name, btw) is the perfect kind of studio "companion." He lies on a cushion next to the ceiling-to-floor window & watches for any intrusion that might disturb my inner sanctum. Of course, just when I am deeply focused on a fine detail in the painting, he begins to excitedly bark at the neighbor's goats or cows who lean over the fence to get that green blade of grass just out of their reach! More than once I have had to retrieve my paintbrush from the far corner after such an outburst. All in all, he makes a good & faithful companion, content to just be in the room with me, making no demands whatever, except foran occasional pat on the head. What more can you ask of a good friend?

"If I Can't Be a Surgeon, I'll Be An Artist"

One of my art students has many hats to wear..one of them is as a writer. Here is an example of her work:
"Lately I have considered myself to be one of the luckiest persons alive. Why? Because I am an artist. That may not be a big deal to you, but it is to me. There's been a lot of years when I just wasn't sure what my 'calling' was. I spent quite a few years as a substitute teacher & was actually very good at it. But it wasn't something I planned for, worked toward, dreamed of. I kinda fell into it & accidentally found I was good with middle school kids & could teach a lesson, & even make most of them pay attention while I taught it....But, the art side of me has always hovered near the surface...during an art class, I was told by several artists that I didn't need to get a degree unless I wanted to teach..my talent was there! Still, just because you decide you want to be a surgeon & can pull all the body parts out of the game Operation in record time, doesn't mean you can own your own scalpel (& use it). My criteria for being able to say, 'I'm an artist' has hinged on being able to sell any of my paintings.......well, I have! I'm going to be hung in a new restaurant! And I have 2 commissions!!..guess what...I'm an artist! Still, that statement & $2 will get me a venti green ginger tea at Starbucks (with 2 Splendas) habit, I need to continue to sell paintings..which means I need to produce paintings-which means I probably don't have time to mop floors or take out the trash much, much less cook dinner......If you need me, I'll be in my studio (back of the house). "Busy Month"

Somehow I have found myself double-booked on the same weekend..I'm judging an art show on Sept 12th & have to drive back to Ft. Worth (2 hrs) in time for art show reception in which I am one of the artists! How do I get myself in these situations?

In addition, I am leaving for a family reunion (2nd or 3rd this year) to Lake Tahoe. Looking forward to a photo shoot while there. I can hardly wait. There will be some wonderful paintings from this trip. Travels are always welcome moments of inspiration for artists. Duty calls!!!

"The Life of an Artist"

I have often heard the phrase, "artists march to the beat of a different drummer"...so true! I have just found a recent article that is so appropriate in describing what we do and what we are as artists. I quote: "The life of a visual fine artist is rewarding, satisfying, and sometimes, necessary. Like many other endeavors, it has its good points. We enjoy what we do..we can do it anywhere..we can do it in our pajamas..we enjoy the process. We can often make money at it..we can teach it...we can enjoy the process. Whilethe quality & beauty of our work..is always in the eye of the beholder, it is a goal to seek out art collectors, gallery owners, or maybe even a museum ..how do we cope with the emotional roller coaster of 'approval, income, the ups and downs of our careers?'" "The Last Grandchild"

As with most families, we have a family tradition. My g-grandfather built handmade chairs & rockers for extra income. In the early days, he took a wagon load of rockers & various types of chairs to market. On his last trip, he gave each of his grown children a chair with the instructions that it was to be handed down to the youngest of each grandchild as a family heirloom. As luck would have it, the little red chair was given to my mother, the youngest at that time. Now I am in possession of this small chair which is being preserved for my youngest.

The seat is covered with old deer hide that has split & curled in the most interesting texture. The quilt, the Bethlehem Star pattern, also her quilt, is reminisicent of the period in which the chair was fashioned. Her christening dress, garden hat, and doll are all a part of her place in our family...this is a portrait of "the last grandchild" of my generation.

"Art in the Garden '09"..I've been accepted!

I've just been notified that I've been accepted into "Art in the Garden 2009" at the Ft. Worth Botanic Garden (Ft. Worth, Tx). The show will be held in the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center on September 11-13, 2009. This artwork is posted on July 27, 2008 in this blog. I was honored to learn that the juror was very impressed with "The DeGolyer View". He has had many credentials, among them, a staff member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Washington, D.C. If you are in the vicinity of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, please attend this noteworthy show.

"Crossroads N Ranch"

This is a very large ranch that we pass by every time we take a shortcut to one of the major interstate highways in Texas. For years I wondered why it was called "Crossroads Ranch." As we passed by on one of our trips into Oklahoma, I looked back & saw the "crosses" on the top of the silos & a cross with the letter "n" beside it. This is such a lovely area. I determined for several years that I was going to paint them. Just so happens that the tenants were there the day I chose to set my easel up & paint-such willing models! The paper was slightly wrinkled when I took this picture..the framing took out those uneven areas.

"Vendimia"

Grapes-a symbol of life, immortality, harvest, a time of joy. This is my newest "note from the easel". I chose to paint the palomino grape which is used for making "fino" and "amontillado" (sherry wine). It is not just a white grape, but goes through many color changes as it ripens on the vine.

While on a tour through a vineyard, I spied this beautiful cluster of grapes, with the sun peeking through the leaves. I wanted to share the moment with you. Beautiful, isn't it?

"Isaiah's Scroll"

What could be more about Easter than the celebration of the Resurrection? This small painting is my spiritual tribute to the One whom this season is all about. The prophet Isaiah is known as the "prophet of the messiah" because of several writings which foretold of a coming savior for his people. His was a "celebration of life." This particular scroll is chosen from Isaiah, chapter 53....Happy Easter everyone!

"Pomegranates with Lime"

I love pomegranates....they are both tasty and interesting to paint! I also love painting small works..aka..miniatures (altho' this is not a true miniature in the sense of scale). Painting on such a small canvas helps me to have a sense of immediancy in brushwork and spontaneity in composition and color. I don't get "buried in the details". Many painters have a blog advertising "a painting a day." I do not try to keep that schedule. There are too many wonderful ideas in my head that simply won't fit that daily rigor. The pomegranates in my kitchen, however, seemed to beg to be captured in this simple, but appealing still-life. Please feel free to enjoy...or maybe you'd like to buy a pomegranate & share my enthusiam?

"Signs of Spring"

It's nearly the season for painting in "plein air"-a term the French used to painting outside. Here in Texas the bluebonnets are in their seed pods waiting to burst forth and announce the arrival of Spring! It is also the season designated as a sign of "new life." This beautiful Arabian, belonging to one of my friends, has just experienced a sign of new life with her son, "Prophet." Can you smell the flowers yet?

"Cloak of Honor"

It's been awhile since my last posting...Christmas was a busy time for me. As vice-president of Shows for my local art guild, I had to oversee the installation of the Western Art Show that is being held concurrently with the Ft. Worth Livestock & Exposition Show in Ft. Worth, Tx. Our Western Show will be held during the entire month of February. It includes not only western, but Native American, wildlife, landscape & photography. One of the entries is this painting of a Cherokee man who is known as the "Principal Chief". As head of the Cherokees, he dons a turkey feather cloak when welcoming other tribal dignitaries, at weddings, or any ceremony which requires his presence as acting Principal Chief. Only a man who exhibits great leadership skills for guiding his people has the honor to wear this robe....hence, the "cloak of honor."

"No Generation Gap"

In today's society, teenagers and younger siblings sometimes grow apart in their common interests. Native American society, however, is a little different. Native children learn by the role-playing of the matriarchal members of the family. This painting is very contemporary in nature, enjoining the past with the present. These two sisters, a decade apart in age, are sitting in a living room, replete with contemporary decor, yet on the wall hangs a war shield reminiscent of days long ago. The elder sister is lacing a toy cradleboard for her younger sibling. In turn, the younger sister observes the method of lacing while holding a doll made by a beloved grandmother. Strengthened by the common bond of their Native culture, these sisters have "no generation gap."

"Antique Pitcher with Fruit"

It's been awhile since I've last posted. The Autumn foliage is turning into a collage of beautiful colors, too numerous to describe. It lasts only a short while, though, until all of the leaves will fall, leaving the spiry branches of our trees to stand bare and alone. I was standing under some trees behind our property amid a rainbow of leaves that drifted all around me. It was like standing under a waterfall of leaves when the wind blew! It's inspiring me to paint an autumn scene.

My art gallery is preparing for a miniature show & I have been painting some small works..mostly still-life. It has been a good change of pace from the large studio works I painted for the Arboretum Show in Dallas. Here is an example of my recent efforts....

"Bountiful Harvest"

Anyone for pumpkin pie? This is a new technique for me. I originally intended to paint this with brushwork, but the background needed a different approach to texture, so I picked up a palette knife & started painting. It was so much fun that I just continued to cover the canvas with paint. The colors were so luminous that I couldn't stop painting! It was the old tractor combined with the surface of the pumpkins that challenged me to paint another way.

" Bluebonnet Spring"

The state flower of Texas is the bluebonnet. In mid-late spring, these flowers grow in mass profusion in North and Central Texas. There are many places to see these fields of intense "cobalt blue" flowers and regions that host designated tours. There are many artists who focus their paintings on just this genre. I always delight to go to Fredericksburg during this time & paint these flowers in plein air. Needless to say, this is not the time of the year for this, but I hope you will enjoy this painting of an abandoned German farm whose fields were abundantly growing with Texas bluebonnets.

"Three's Company, maybe five?..."

"En Plein Air"

I titled this painting "En Plein Air" with the French term meaning "painting outside on location." This is the 2nd painting that has been accepted into the art show at the Dallas Arboretum. My first attempt to paint "en plein air" was rained out and had to return another day. Such are the hazards of painting on location...along with heat, mosquitoes, and nosey squirrels. During the process of painting in what I thought was a private area just off a pathway, I heard a clicking noise, turned around and found that about 20 people were taking pictures of my creative endeavor! Privacy is another element that is forfeited when painting out-of-doors. It is also a very good way to meet interesting people.

"The DeGolyer View"

This is one of 2 entries accepted into the "Paint-Out at the Arboretum" (Dallas, Tx) scheduled for the month of Sept '08. It will be showcased along with a national exhibit, "Beauty and the Brush". There will also be a "Members Only" event at the same time.

This painting is based on one of the windows at the front entrance of the DeGolyer house, built by the DeGolyer family in the early 1900's. It sits on 66 acres of lavish botanicl gardens. I was inspired by the contrast of texture between the stone masonry, the iron scrollwork and the graceful arch formed by the pale yellow roses.

"Wings of Gold"

How majestic is the golden eagle! He is larger than the bald eagle with a wing span up to 7 feet. While in the Yellowstone National Park, we rounded a curve overlooking a steep cliff and suddenly had to stop because this golden eagle flew around that curve and straight in front of our van. His back was facing us and the sun brillantly shown on the back of his outstretched wings, turning them to a beautiful bronze. My heart leaped at the sight. The incident had to be memorized because it occurred too quickly to grab a camera. This is another study in the series "Birds of Prey." It is an oil on canvas, 8 x 10" in size.

"King of His Domain"

The bald eagle is a symbol of our nation. While traveling through the Yellowstone National Park, I was privileged to observe this beautiful eagle as he perched in one of those stately huge oaks in the park. A study for a much larger painting, it is an oil on canvas, 8 x 10" in size. This painting is the first in a series of paintings entitled, "Birds of Prey," which was part of a Wildlife Museum show near Dallas, Texas.

"Unscheduled Rest Stop"

This painting, an oil on canvas, 24 x 30, was inspired by a trip through the vast wilderness in West Texas. It reminded me of the history of the pioneers who traveled by stagecoach in the 1800's. The sheer raw beauty of the land contrasts with the determination of those who blazed the early trails of transportation. Because of the distance between stagecoach outposts and the heat, it was sometimes necessary to let the animals take a "breather" and rest. It also gave the passengers time to ease aching muscles from the bumps and ruts in the wagon trails, among other things.

"Journey of the Enduring Spirit"

Everyone has a journey through this life, starting with the cradle. How we respond to the unexpected on this journey shapes and molds our destiny. This is an oil-on-linen canvas, 24 x 30, of a Native American and his daughter. The figures are moving "into" the composition, signifying a look forward into the future. They are members of the Seminole nation-the only Native Americans known to have never entered into a treaty with the intruders of land expansion. "Echo Canyon"

As a painter of landscapes, portraits, and wildlife, I look for inspiration in my travels. I paint "en plein air" whenever possible. "Echo Canyon" , near Chama, New Mexico, is both restful and spiritual. The calm, quiet atmosphere of this place provided a tranquil setting in which to set up my easel. And, as I began painting, the stillness provided a setting for the birds and small animals to approach and accept my presence. My father always said, "be still and let nature invade your soul..."

This is a painting done from a plein air study as an oil on canvas, 18 x 24. It has also become available as a glicee`.
